Ingredients

Scale
  • Thick-cut brioche or pain de mie bread
  • 4 slices of high-quality ham (Parisian or Black Forest)
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for toasting)

Instructions

  • Prepare the béchamel sauce by melting butter, adding flour, then gradually whisking in warm milk until thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  • Assemble the sandwich by spreading Dijon mustard on one side of each slice of bread. Add ham and Gruyère cheese, then top with another slice of bread.
  • Toast the sandwich in a buttered skillet over medium heat until golden brown.
  • For extra crispiness, bake in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for 5 minutes.
  • Optionally, broil for 2 minutes for a cheesy top layer. Serve hot!
